Damien Memorial School
Our mission: Damien Memorial School was founded in 1962 and is named after Hawaii’s great humanitarian, Saint Damien of Molokai. The mission for our private school serving grades 6-12 is to guide young men and women from all walks of life to become responsible, respectful and community-minded citizens who are prepared to excel in higher education and are ready for the challenges in their future. As a community of faith missioned by the Roman Catholic Church, we espouse the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ as exemplified in the Essential Elements of an Edmund Rice Christian Brother Education and through the selfless service of Saint Damien of Molokai.
Located on the island of Oahu in the community of Kalihi-Palama, Damien is committed to serve underprivileged families and students in our neighborhood. One of our Guiding Principles is to stand in solidarity with those marginalized by poverty and injustice, and a majority of the students come from families with modest to low incomes. In the coming school year, over $1.7 million in financial aid, tuition assistance and scholarships will be awarded to approximately 80 percent of the student body. Damien is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, The National Catholic Educational Association, and the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools.
Why WEfficiency: With our commitment to maintain affordability for middle- to low-income families, Damien Memorial School has initiated very few capital improvement projects over its 50 years of educating Hawaii’s students. WEfficiency aligns with our affordability commitment, while enabling us to combine our focus on excellence, dedication to our students, stewardship of a growing enrollment, and conversation of natural resources. Our gymnasium lighting retrofit project will bring our gymnasium lighting up to tournament standards, while decreasing energy costs. WEfficiency will help us to work towards long-term sustainability in a fiscally prudent yet operationally efficient manner. It makes us better stewards of our limited funds while achieving our goals for energy conservation. And, best of all, the savings will help us maintain tuition affordability for our families.
